When the Franks were defeated by the Muslims in battle, those left alive who failed to escape were taken away as prisoners. When the French Crusaders were defeated at Gaza in 1239, the scene depicted here, the Templars and Hospitallers were blamed for not giving more assistance to the Crusaders, despite the fact that they had advised the Crusaders against making their disastrous expedition.
