The Morgan Crusader Bible of Louis IX or Maciejowski Bible or The Bible of Shah Abbas

Upper register
Folio 39 recto

Israel Triumphant:
The Philistines have learned that David is now king of all Israel and decide to take action against this new threat. David, sanctioned by the heavenly gaze of the Lord, rides forth with his army to deal with the enemy. At Baal Perazim (which literally means is Baal broken [Master of Breakthroughs]), the battle begins and the Philistines are utterly defeated. David, bearing a blue shield with a golden lion rampart, runs a Philistine horseman through with his javelin. The contrast between the well-organized ranks of Israelite cavalry at the left and the chaotic mass of fleeing Philistines at the right testifies to the military superiority of David's forces. (2 Samuel 5:17–20)

DAVID DEFEATING THE PHILISTINES FROM THE MORGAN PICTURE BIBLE
The Pierpont Morgan Library
This miniature, made in France in about 1250, shows David defeating the Philistines. The mounted knights wear mail armor and great helms or kettle hats; most are also wearing long surcoats. The knights are shown charging with their lances couched or wielding a long, tapered, double-edged sword. Shields are now shorter than the long kite-shaped shield popular in the previous two centuries. This beautifully illustrated manuscript, once known as the Maciejowski Bible, is now in the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City (MS M.638, f. 39).
