DAVID DEFEATS THE SYRIANS FROM THE MORGAN PICTURE BIBLE
New York City, The Pierpont Morgan Library, MS M.638, f. 40
This miniature, from the former Maciejowski Bible—now called the Morgan Picture Bible—was produced in France in about 1250, and depicts King David defeating the Syrians. The mounted knights are in full charge with couched lance and sword, but the infantry soldiers to the right are scaling the walls of a town using ladders while another soldier is attacking the gate with a pickaxe. All soldiers are wearing mail that covers the entire torso, arms, and legs, including the hands and feet. Several different helmets are shown, including great helms on the cavalry and kettle hat helmets on the infantry.
