It was initially commissioned by Duke Philip's cousin Jehan de Bourgogne, governor of Picardy; that copy is lost, but the first of the superb surviving manuscripts was produced by Wauquelin’s atelier at Mons for Philip the Good himself, presumably in 1447 as it is recorded as being paid for in April 1448.
