THE BATTLE OF PREUSSISCH-EYLAU, 7th - 8th February 1807 After downloading, you should have the following Zip files : . PenModExe.zip . GenericPenmodBags1_3.zip or later . RussianVoices.zip . RussianMusic.zip . FrenchMusic.zip . EylauCommonFiles.zip . EylauWNLBV2_5.zip or later If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, see http://greatestbattlesforum.yuku.com/topic/734/Batch-Files-Windows-7 Make a copy of your Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Battle folder or a new installation and name it EylauWNLB. Extract the zip files in the order above into the EylauWNLB folder with 'use folder names' & 'overwrite existing files' checked. (PenModExe.zip contains Penmod.exe, a .dll and an .ini file. Extract this 1st and the .ini file will be overwritten latter by the Eylau one which has campaign=27.) The .BMP files in the WaterArmy subfolder of the Graphics folder must be loaded into the WaterArmy.bag in the Graphics sub-folder using BAGBOY. If you don't have the BAGBOY program, you can download it from Davros' site http://users.chariot.net.au/~mab/zips/units.html Install it by double clicking on bagboy.exe and following the installation wizard prompts. If you have BAGBOY installed, double click on WaterArmy.bag, navigate to the WaterArmy subfolder, select bmp from the drop down box, click on the 1st file, scroll to the last, hold down the 'shift' key and click on the last to select them all. Click 'Open". Close Bagboy. The .BMP files in the WaterMisc subfolder of the Graphics are miscellaneous graphics items & must be loaded into the WaterMisc.bag in the Graphics sub-folder using BAGBOY. The .BMP files in the WaterMap subfolder of the Graphics are terrain features & must be loaded into the WaterMap.bag in the Graphics folder using BAGBOY. Files in the WaterCmd subfolder of the Graphics must be loaded into the WaterCmd.bag in the Graphics folder using BAGBOY. Run ScenmapCopy.bat in the WaterAux subfolder in the Graphics folder by double-clicking on it. It produces copies of the scenario maps numbered for each scenario. Close the DOS window. Files in the WaterAux subfolder of the Graphics must be loaded into the WaterAux.bag in the Graphics folder using BAGBOY. SOUNDS ****** Run EylauWNLB_CopySounds.bat in the Sounds sub folder by double clicking on it. This will copy the German sounds to the British files, then Russian sounds to the German files. Don't run it twice or you will get Russian sounds in the British files as well. The Russian voices are from ANGV. (In ANGV: Artyfbr.wav, Router.wav & Winr.wav are actually in German, so other commands are repeated for these.) MUSIC ***** RussianMusic.zip puts Russian_trk_2.wav, Russian_trk_3.wav (from ANGV) & Bozhe, tsarya khrani (God Save The Czar) into a music subfolder of the Sounds folder. FrenchMusic.zip puts FrenchSong02.wav, FrenchSong06.wav & FrenchSong12.wav into a music subfolder of the Sounds folder. Delete Waterloo.exe If using XP or later, right click on Penmod.exe and set the properties to Win98 compatibility. Run Penmod.exe to run the game. You can make a shortcut on the desktop by right clicking on Penmod.exe, "send to" then "Desktop (create shortcut)". waterloo.ini should contain: "Campaign=27". When you have had enough Eylau, delete the EylauWNLB folder & shortcut, no need to restore. ********************************************************************************************* In v2: Prussian artillerymen in bicornes replace the 1815 figures. Other artillerymen graphics have been arranged correctly with figures altered to give animation. Russian guns replace standard British guns. Portraits of generals are included, plus medals, gravestones, new main menu buttons, flags for end game & details, a menu file and battle info (from the ANGV version). A hats file was not included in the original download - some hat numbers have been changed to match standard hats. The troops of Engelhardt were superimposed on those of Mecklenburg in "Augereau's Disaster" & "The Battle of Preussisch-Eylau". Engelhardt's troops have been moved to be around him. The elevations have been altered to give a step in elevation between each level used. The road code at intersections has been changed so that trails do not start with a section of road. Streams now flow downstream & lakes are not on slopes. Names of sites have been moved a little so they correspond to the site. Blank town ground has been added between town squares to reduce poor edge effects. The sound changes are comprehensive. v2.1 Some infantry graphics have been repaired - "halo" removed, background or shadow colour that is not quite the right shade corrected. Spots of background or shadow within the figures corrected. "Unseen" and "in square" rows of "stand" placed correctly. Change of colour of Prussian & Russian Jager's crossbelts from white to black completed. The missing legs from the 1st column of the "shoot" graphic of the earlier Russian Jager have been replaced. Cavalry converted from ANGV have had the 1st row figures in profile moved forward to align with the 2nd row. French infantry that had or may have had white uniforms have been revised. Those with imperial green have the green facing, those with scarlet or capucine red have the red facings, those with other colours now wear greatcoats, as do some other line infantry. Tirailleurs Corses had chacos & are therefore portrayed in light infantry uniforms (but there is the possibility of a brown uniform with green facings - http://www.napoleon-series.org/military/organization/c_corses.html) Tirailleurs du Po had bicornes and red faced blue uniforms with blue breeches, but use the same graphic slot. 6 portraits added. Mamloucks added to OBF & graphics added (from the ANGV version). Engelhardt's infantry have been changed from Army 5 to Army 2. Graeme http://warfare.cf/Greatest_Battles/Greatest_Battles.htm ********************************************************************************************* DESIGNERS NOTES 7th-8th February 1807 : The Battle of Preussich-Eylau at the end of the Polish winter campaign was one of the bloodiest engagements of the Napoleonic wars, fought in a snow storm and famous for what was probably one of the largest cavalry charges in history. Due to the size of the battle which makes it quite a challenge to play with the WNLB engine, I have also provided 5 smaller more playable scenarios which enable the whole battle to be played out step by step : 1) Bagration's Rearguard action on the eve of the main battle 2) Augereau's Disaster 3) Murat's Great Cavalry Charge 4) Davout's Advance 5) The Struggle for Kulschitten and the arrival of the Prussians The artillery uses WNLB standard format & so are not historically accurate in terms of composition. I have reduced the total number of Russian guns present to just over 300 from 450-500 actual - this is to reflect the inferior quality Russian powder coupled with snow conditions - misfires were not infrequent... and also of course to make the game more playable. The game starts at 10am whereas the real battle started between 7am & 7.30am. This is because the first three hours of the battle consisted only of a Russian artillery bombardment which was relatively ineffective due to the good French concealment, & the smoke blowing back in the faces of the Russian gunners. ******************************************************************* SOURCES Chandler - Campaigns of Napoleon Lachouque - Les batailles de Napoléon Esposito & Elting - Military History & Atlas of the Napoleonic Wars Funcken - Arms & Uniforms of the Napoleonic Wars Various websites ******************************************************************* CREDITS My thanks go to Davros who did a really great job creating the new Teeniemap for Eylau as well as offering a lot of other useful advice & also to Marbot whose excellent Scenario & Map creator saved me hours of design time.
