Detail of Vanni's fresco of the battle of Sinalunga in 1363 in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, showing infantrymen marching into battle with their officers. They are preceded by musicians with drums and fifes and their ranks include crossbowmen. Note the rectangular shields and also the crossbow emblem on the flags.
