Detail of Federigo de Montefeltro by Della Francesca c.1470

FEDERIGO DA MONTEFELTRO
This 1472 portrait of Federigo da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, shows him wearing a superb up-to-the-minute Italian armor that covers him from head to foot. His helmet and gauntlets are on the floor in front of him. A fringe of mail with a brass border can be seen below his armor. His sword is hung from his waist by an elaborate set of straps, which ensured that it was held in such a way that it could be easily drawn with his right hand. This famous painting, by Piero della Francesca, is a detail from the Brera Altarpiece and is now in the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan, Italy.
