This is RVinceD's Glendale & Malvern Hill, Peninsula Campaign, 1862. It has a detailed to-scale map, new buildings, trees etc. There are 5 scenarios for White Oak Swamp, Glendale/Nelson's Farm/Frazier's Farm & MalvernCliff/Turkey Bridge on 30 June 1862 and 3 scenarios for Malvern Hill on 1 Jully 1862. I have added Opening Screens, animated intro screens and Randomization Lines to give alternate setups. The scenarios are linked by .dlg files so can be played as a sequence & with battle honor graphics. I have added a skirmish near Willis Church on the 29th June 1862 to take up the 1st slot which is not part of the "play the battle" sequence - play this as CSA 1st. The other scenarios can be played with either less or more units set in preferences. I suggest slow rally so green troops can come back again rather than disperse. Using patch 3 is advised. Have 'Show Scenario Introductions' set to see the animated intro screens. To play the branched sequence of games - choose "Fight Glendale- Malvern Hill as a Series". Save the game at the end of each scenario and choose "next scenario". The Randomization Lines work most of the time, but the randomization routine can go up a blind alley and be unable to produce a game, so if you have saved you can try again, or use the auto saved game. Please post any comments and requests to http://mattslow.proboards.com/ To install: (unless you are short of hard disk space) make a copy of your gettysburg folder and rename it as Glendale-MalvernHill. Unzip into the Glendale-MalvernHill folder with "Use Folder Names" and "Overwrite Existing Files" checked. Say yes if asked to overwrite any read only files. Honors for each battle in the Glendale-MalvernHill battles will be displayed on a flag after each battle and an overall final score will be given at the end of the series. These honors are extracted into a sub-folder of the Glendale-MalvernHill folder called 'Flags' when you un-zip. Graphics for the animated introductions are extracted into sub-folders of the Glendale-MalvernHill folder called 'dialogs' & 'Sounds'. The dialog sound files contain no sounds but have timing marks used by the .dlg files. The Video folder contains 2 short videos which replace the Gettysburg introductory videos. Files are used from these sub-folders in preference to similar folders on the CD. The SMG CD must be in a drive (not the SMA CD) for the animated intro screens to play. If your operating system is using the default of "hide common extensions" you will not see ".exe" etc. Make a shortcut on the desktop by right clicking on lee.exe, "send to" then "Desktop (create shortcut)". When you have had enough Glendale & Malvern Hill, delete the Glendale-MalvernHill folder & shortcut, no need to restore. Graeme http://smgettysburg.webs.com/SMG.htm ************************************************************************************* From RVinceD's design notes: GLENDALE June 30th - Day 6 of 7 Days Battle The Union marched during a very dark night, at times using candles to see their way. The situation was similar to: a battle ending at sunset; union marching at night; confederates remaining behind and collecting prisoners and supplies and equipment left behind; next morning union resting in battle line as confederates begin their march to make contact; and then a battle beginning after mid day. Both sides must have been haggard. The fact they were mainly green troops is a testimony to both armies (or rather the individual fighting man) as to their spirited approach to fighting the war. Jackson and DH Hill approach and see the White Oak Swamp bridge destroyed with strong enemy lines behind it. Only an artillery duel is executed. Jackson chooses not to explore the usage of fords that existed on the flanks. Huger then arrives, after being slowed by felled trees, and he too only executes an artillery duel. Holmes approaches Malvern Hill at daylight but is surprised to find Porter and the reserve artillery defending it. His green troops are no match for what opposes them. Longstreet, with AP Hill behind him, approaches from the southwest. Lee and Jefferson Davis visit him on the front lines. Longstreet's attack pushes Reynolds Pennsylvania Reserves off the line, but reinforcements are available (since Jackson and Huger are not aggressive). McClellan successfully maneuvered his army to the James River. RE Lee was continually disappointed in the lack of success each day. Everyone felt the hill was too strong to take. Longstreet berated the others by stating that they had the enemy on the ropes. One final push would finish them off. RE Lee agreed and felt Longstreet's and Jackson's artillery could lay a crossfire on the hill and allow a successful attack. This was not so. The ground was so bad that the batteries showed up in piecemeal. Every time they opened fire, the huge number of Union guns (practically all US Regular batteries) would direct their fire in counter battery and silence the confederate gunners. To protect themselves, Armistead's brigade moves forward to drive off Berdan's sharpshooters, but Magruder believes this to be a successful advance and orders one brigade after another to advance. Hearing the gunfire, DH Hill also advances. The confederates are unable to move the enemy from the hill.
