A knight fell in love with a lady, but she rejected him.
He went to an abbot to confess and to ask for God’s help in winning the object of his affections.
The abbot told him to pray to the Virgin and to say 200 Ave Marias every day for a year.
The knight followed the abbot’s instructions. On the rare days that he failed to say his prayers, he made amends and said them later.
One day while he was praying, the Virgin appeared to him. She asked him to choose between her and his love.
He renounced his lady and said 100 Ave Marias for the Virgin. When a year had passed, he died.
