The United States Army (US Army)
The commander of US troops (ca. 750 men) on Java Island was Major-General J.F. Barnes. The American troops consisted of:
• 26th Field Artillery Brigade [this would be the headquarters unit], departed San Francisco 21 November 1941, arrived in Australia on 22 December 1941 and was eventually dispatched to reinforce allied forces on Java where it served 11 January 1942 - 27 February 1942 and returned to Australia on 4 March 1942
• 2nd Battalion of the 131st Field Artillery Regiment [Texas National Guard], which was a part of 26th Field Artillery Brigade. It departed from San Francisco on 21 November 1941, arrived Australia, sent to Java Island and deployed to Malang area, where it surrendered on 8 March 1942 to Japanese forces.

Brigadier A.S. Blackburn scrounged up a number of Bren guns, some antitank rifles, three mortars, 600 grenades, some trucks, a few carriers and a considerable number of light armoured cars. He organized BLACKFORCE into three infantry battalions which he numbered:

Nihon Rikugun (Imperial Japanese Army)
The Japanese Invasion Force intended for the occupation of the Java Island, was the 16th Army HQ under the command of Lieutenant-General Hitoshi Imamura and the Chief of Staff Major-General Okasaki.
The composition of this army was as follows

• 230th Infantry Regiment of 38th Division

Teikoku Kaigun (Imperial Japanese Navy)
For the direct attack and occupation of Java Island a combined Java Force was formed, consisting of a force for Western Java and one for Eastern Java under command of Vice-Admiral Ibo Takahashi aboard the heavy cruiser Ashigara, accompanied by the cruiser Myoko and two destroyers, the Ikazuchi and Akebono.

Force for Western Java
Left Camranh Bay (French Indochina) on February 18th for landings at Merak, Bantam Bay and Eretanwetan. The convoy consisted of 56 transport ships carrying the Headquarters of the 16th Army, the 2nd Division and the 230th Infantry Regiment. The convoy escort was under the command of Rear-Admiral Kenzaburo Hara. It consisted of
